Democracy seems to be a recurring theme with the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition this August. They are hosting three community events that encourage people to learn, discuss, and participate in civic life.

While most of the events are organized through partner organizations of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition, a separate democracy-focused event is also taking place. A candidate forum will offer voters the chance to hear directly from those seeking seats on the Corvallis City Council.

The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition is known for promoting environmental initiatives, but its mission also includes strengthening the social and civic engagement of the community.

The first act begins on August 11th, with “Our Democracy,” hosted by the Corvallis chapter of Third Act Oregon at the Corvallis Community Center. The evening starts with postcard writing to prospective voters from 4:30–5:00 p.m., followed by a discussion led by longtime environmental studies and street law instructor Tom Coppolino from 5–6:00 p.m.

Participants will explore what democracy means, the U.S. Constitution, and whether protecting marginalized communities from disproportionate environmental hazards is a measure of a healthy democracy.

The following evening, August 12, community members can meet many of the candidates running for City Council during a Candidate Forum. The event is from 6–8:30 p.m. at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library.

Candidates for Mayor and City Council Wards 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 9 are expected to participate. Residents are encouraged to submit questions in advance. The event offers voters an opportunity to hear directly from those hoping to shape Corvallis’ future.

Back to The Sustainability Coalition (and the democracy theme), on August 18th, the Corvallis chapter of Third Act Oregon will host a free screening of the documentary What Is Democracy? from 5:30–7:45 p.m. at the Corvallis Community Center.

Directed by Astra Taylor, the film explores fundamental questions about democracy through conversations with academics, activists, politicians, refugees, students, and others from a wide range of backgrounds.

On August 19th, The League of Women Voters of Corvallis presents “How Misinformation Distorts Elections: The Role of Local Journalism” from 6:30–8 p.m. at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library.

The panel will feature former Corvallis Gazette-Times editor Penny Rosenberg, The Corvallis Advocate Editor and Publisher Steve Schultz, Dan Crall of KORC-FM, and Jim Rondeau of KLCC.

The discussion is the first in a three-part series titled “Truth, Trust, and Democracy: Information, Elections, and Voter Confidence,” examining how local journalism influences informed voting and public confidence in elections.
