Benton County is entering a period of transition after Rachel McEneny, who had served as the county’s administrator, announced her resignation effective Wednesday.
Rachel McEneny served as the Benton County Administrator for just over two years. McEneny's salary was $260,150 annually.
In an email to county staff, Board Chair Pat Malone shared that McEneny is stepping down to focus primarily on her extended family and to pursue other professional opportunities. The official resignation letter did not specify any other reasons for her departure.
McEneny had led Benton County’s administrative functions for about two and a half years. During her time in the role, county officials noted she guided the organization through several challenges — including navigating a historic labor dispute in late 2024 — and sought to strengthen relationships between leadership and union employees.
As part of her legacy, county leaders highlighted efforts to increase transparency by making decades of meeting records more accessible online and improving the county’s communication platforms. Officials also credited her with anticipating budget shortfalls tied to federal funding cuts and instituting a hiring freeze that helped the county avoid layoffs experienced elsewhere in Oregon.
Under McEneny’s oversight, several major infrastructure projects moved forward. These include the opening of the Barbara Ross Children and Family Services Building in 2024, the launch of the Benton County Crisis Center in mid-2025 — one of just a handful of its kind in the state — and groundbreaking for a new courthouse and emergency operations center scheduled to open in spring 2027.
During the transition period, Assistant County Administrator Rick Crager will fill in as acting administrator as the county begins the process of recruiting a permanent replacement.
Malone expressed appreciation for McEneny’s contributions, saying her leadership helped strengthen county operations and set the organization up for future success.
