Through the Noise, Corvallis Breathes… And We Are Humbly Grateful
There’s always another headline. Another meeting. Another protest. Another problem to solve. If you follow current local debates here, you know the arguments don’t end… they just change shape. They always have. They always will. They were here 20 years ago, and they will be here 20 years from now. There will always be a cause to rally behind, and just as surely, a counterpoint standing across the street. Whether you like it or not.
That’s not failure. That’s not right or wrong. That’s life. That’s a constant strive for perfection, and a cycle that will never end. It’s a system we live in to make the world a better place. Make Corvallis a better place.
Corvallis is already a better place. Many people will argue saying “there is nothing we don’t have here.” But if you take the time. Step back. Breathe. Look around. You will understand what we do have. What you have.
Sure, your car will still break down, your pet will still get sick, bills will come faster than paychecks, money will come and go, some days will feel too heavy, and some days too quiet. Some days too hot, and some days too cold. And the future? It will always remain just out of reach… uncertain, unfinished, and unwritten.
Breathe. This is Corvallis. A place where the light hits the trees just right in the early morning. Where strangers hold doors open. Where flowers bloom in an array of colors. Where traffic jams don’t exist. Where neighbors still check in. Where you can see the same familiar faces, at the same coffee shops, and feel at home. Where people care enough to show up. Because they believe in something. No matter what side you are on.
Maybe you should support the No Kings protest next Saturday. Maybe you should protest the protest. Recall the school board, or support the board’s work. Read The Advocate, The Gazette-Times, The Barometer, The Inquirer… or… turn it all off and unplug for a bit. Drown out the noise. And be grateful. And humble.
And here’s the truth we don’t say often enough: The cycle will not break. The police briefs will not end. There will never be a day when everything is solved. There will never be a moment when all the fires are put out. The critics and supporters will always exist.
A giant dumping ground for trash north of town… will always be an issue. Rental agencies for profit will always be an issue. Local politics will always be an issue. There are going to be rich people, poor people, and homeless people, and inequalities in wealth. What makes this place special isn’t the absence of problems. It’s the presence of people who refuse to let those problems define everything.
The beauty of Corvallis isn’t just in the river, or the hills, or the quiet streets at dusk. Proximity to the ocean, larger towns, and mountain views. It’s in the choice, every day, to keep going. To keep helping. To keep believing that things, somehow, can still be better.
The 13th-century poet Rumi once wrote:
“Everything that is made beautiful, and fair, and lovely is made for the eye of the one who sees.”
So see it. See the good in your neighbor. See the kindness in small moments. See the beauty in a place that, like all places, is imperfect, but still deeply worth loving. Don’t exist in the world, live in it. Don’t exist in our small, beautiful tranquil town… live in it.
Take a walk. Call a friend. Go to the farmer’s market. Explore the McDonald-Dunn Forest. Support a local business. Support a cause. A non-profit. An animal shelter. Find something you love… or find something new you didn’t know you loved. Because in between all the noise, and all the arguments, all the stress… Corvallis is still here. Breathing. And if you let yourself see it, it’s an incredible place to be.
If a homeless, older cat, named Greyskul, up for adoption in a sea of cute kittens, with everything working against him, can find moments of happiness… then we should be able to as well.
