Price Check: How Corvallis Grocery Stores Compare on 10 Everyday Items
10 random items compared at the local Corvallis: Walmart, Fred Meyer and Safeway
As food prices continue to be a top concern for local families, we sampled 10 common grocery items at three major Corvallis retailers: Walmart, Fred Meyer, and Safeway.
The goal: see where shoppers can stretch their dollars the furthest on a typical cart of staples — from eggs and ground beef to soda and frozen pizza.
Results:
Across the 10 sampled items:
Walmart had the lowest price on 8 of 10 items
Fred Meyer had the lowest price on 1 item (ground beef)
Safeway had the lowest price on 1 item (chicken breast, by a penny per pound)
If you bought one of each item (using per-pound items as single pounds for comparison), your total would be approximately:
Walmart: $55.09
Fred Meyer: $65.36
Safeway: $68.50
That’s a $10+ difference between Walmart and Fred Meyer, and more than $13 compared to Safeway on just 10 items.
Prices were sampled from Corvallis locations during the same time period. No coupons, rewards pricing, or bulk discounts were applied. Per-pound items were standardized to one pound for comparison purposes.
Bottom Line
On this 10-item basket, Walmart was the clear price leader in Corvallis — particularly on beverages and pantry staples — while Fred Meyer and Safeway were more competitive in fresh meat.
As grocery prices continue to fluctuate, even small differences per item can add up quickly for local households.
Would you shop at multiple stores to save $10–$15 per trip? For many Corvallis families, that math might be worth considering.
